How do you know it's time to buy a wine fridge?
Do you have bottles in boxes in your closet or pantry?
If you have more than a case (12) of wine at a time, it is definitely time to get a wine fridge.  The top reason is proper storage to make sure your wine stays "fresh" and not tainted by UV rays or temperature fluctuations.  This is your investment, so it's time to treat it that way.
You can always start with a counter top wine cooler if your budget is tight.

Why Should I Buy a Wine Fridge?
Can't I just keep my wine in the refrigerator?
It is easiest for most just to throw your bottles of Pinot Grigio in the fridge when you get home from the store, but it's much better for the wine to be temperature controlled.
Ideal temperature for
  • White wine is 49-55*F (8-12*C)
  • Red wine is 62-68*F (12-19*C).
The average temperature of a standard fridge is 40*F (4*C) which is much colder than necessary.  Added to that, your standard fridge is opened numerous times during the day, whereas your wine fridge will only be open once or twice.  This also helps to keep the temperature under control.

What do I need to know before buying a fridge?
The basic facts you need to make and informed decision
  • Size and Space-Think about where you want to put your fridge and how much space you have to work with.  After that, you need to think about how many bottles you may purchase in the future.
  • Temperature control-Do you drink both red and white wine and need a fridge that offers dual zone control?  Or do you mostly drink whites and this wouldn't be an issue for you?
  • Freestanding or Built in-Are you designing a new kitchen or adding a bar in your basement?  You may want to consider a built in fridge.  Check out the different sizes before you finalize your design.
